1.
Canto I 03:57
No lyrics, just info: FOREST, LEOPARD, SHE-WOLF, LION and VIRGIL Dante finds himself alone in a dark, gloomy forest at the foot of a mountain. He begins to climb when he is confronted by a leopard, a she-wolf and a lion; all ravenous, all feral and all cursed. He falls to the ground in terror at the lion's approaching when a human form appears. D begs for help. It is the spirit of ancient Roman poet, Virgil. Together they flee the three fell beasts.
2.
Canto II 02:16
No lyrics, just info: BEATRICE Virgil explains his presence is at the request of Beatrice - the woman Dante, since childhood, adored from afar and lost - for him to guide D on his trek through Hell (and Purgatory, later guided through Heaven by Beatrice.) At first, D is daunted by his task ahead but then filled with courage at Beatrice's concern for him. They set off.
3.
Canto III 05:08
No lyrics, just info: GATES OF HELL, APATHETIC SINNERS and FERRYMAN CHARON D&V come to a door in the earth. On its lofty arch are inscribed the disquieting words: "...Through me you to everlasting pain you go... ...Abandon all hope, ye who enter here." Beyond is the threshold on the bank of the River Acheron where dwell "fence-sitters" of the faith, neither free from nor condemned to Hell. Stung by wasps while standing naked in a slosh of blood, tears and worms, the crowd of sinners wail to themselves as our protagonists pass through. Rioting breaks out when it is noticed that D is alive. The poets escape on a boat and are carried across the river by ferryman Charon, his dour face adorned with flame encircled, hot-coal eyes when the earth erupts in a bright vermillion storm and D collapses.
4.
Canto IV 04:37
No lyrics, just info: LIMBO - RING ONE Thunder startles Dante from sleep on the edge of the abyss. No pain but only sighs can be heard when they descend. This is the place for those who lived virtuously but without God. The place for the unbaptised flock to simply after-"live" event-less-ly. D is amazed to find Socrates and Caesar and kings and nobles alike among them. The two take their leave.
5.
Canto V 04:49
No lyrics, just info: MINOS, CONFESSIONS and the LUSTFUL - RING TWO Minos, the infernal judge with his twisting tail, stands over a mob of souls and hears their confessions. He determines punishment to suit their sin and indicates the deserved ring number with coils of his tail before dropping them down. Here, the lustful are forever thrown about in vicious, relentless winds for not being able to control their carnal desires. Dante again, faints.
6.
Canto VI 05:31
No lyrics, just info: CERBERUS, BATTERING RAIN and the GLUTTONS - RING THREE Incessant black rain and hail pummel the punished as they lay face down in a swampy, reeking lake while three-headed monster dog, Cerberus stands guard. Dante talks to Ciacco (also Hoggo; "porker" or "hog"), so nicknamed for his gluttony, who begs to be remembered by the living then returns to the slop, submerged until Judgment Day.
7.
Canto VII 05:07
No lyrics, just info: PLUTUS, SPENDERS and HOARDERS - RING FOUR WRATHFUL and the SLUGGISH - RING FIVE Plutus, the wretched god of wealth in the underworld, skwarks "Ah me! O Satan, Satan!" on D&V's arrival. Crammed together, sinners are sentenced to roll huge boulders around with their naked bodies. Virgil mentions the Wheel of Fortune. Ring five enslaves the souls to ceaselessly beat each other with every limb, head and tooth while the slothful gurgle their gloomy lament at the bottom of the Styx.
8.
Canto VIII 05:20
No lyrics, just info: TOWER, STYGIAN LAKE and the GATES OF DIS At the foot of a signal tower, D spots another fire in the distance when a second ferryman, Phlegyas, hurtles across the angry waves and carries the poets across. Fillipo Argenti (a real enemy of Dante's) unknowingly speaks from the water. In resentment, D&V will him to tear at himself with his teeth. Minarets inside the City can be seen burning a bright red when they reach the gates, crowded by thousands of damned, serpentine angels. Virgil demands passage, as it is willed from Above but they slam the doors in his face. ••• To be continued...

about

This is my instrumental, metal, aural "depiction" of an epic poetic work.

I only ask for reasonable money this time for the months of "extra-curricular" effort I've put in and because I'd like to think the album is honouring something much greater, starting with the publication date of 8th June, which is when Dante's beloved Beatrice died, 730 years ago.

Thank you and please leave comments if you wish!

Sometime in 2018 I decided to read 'Inferno' from the formidable and eternal Dante Alighieri's 'Divine Comedy' (it isn't humorous though lol) and then, as honestly as I am able, instrumentally portray or "narrate" a mixture of the events described, scenes recounted and emotions I imagined, through my favourite genre of music.

I went through the cantos/chapters - reading and re-reading from three different translations - taking notes and researching back-stories, references (of which there are maaany e.g.*) and artworks to give me the best understanding that my non-academic brain can grasp for the most informed approach.

I am about half way through reading, with nearly half that of written music and around half of that actually recorded but I thought Canto VIII; just before Dante and Virgil enter the City of Dis and lower hell, was a good place to end one of potentially four. more. albums... :/

I hope I have, so far, done it the justice I intended.
Enjoy \m/

*in Canto VIII I wrote a part using the fact that the melting point and density at liquid of silver can be understood to be multiples of three, because the part was "narrating" Dante talking to Filippo 'Argenti' - silver's periodic symbol is Ag from the Latin 'argentum' - so nicknamed for adorning his horse with silver and probably his silver hair, too.

•••

Some coincidences I noticed:

- 2020 is exactly 700 years after the completion of Divine Comedy;
- According to Psalm 90:10, Moses says 70 (one tenth - Commandments? lol) are the years man will live;
- At the age of 35 is when Dante wrote he started his quest - "...midway on our path in life" - (album released midway through the year);
- One tenth (again) of both numbers gives 7 (Deadly Sins?) and 3.5, which just so happens to be a fair and evidently, destined price for the album ;)

Cool facts:

Centuries ago 'left' - 'sinistra' (sinister?) in Italian - was considered evil (and female.) While 'right' - 'destra', presumably from Latin 'dexter' (dexterous) - was considered good (and male.)

In the poem, its author, Dante (D) is escorted by the spirit of another ancient poet, Virgil (V) therefore:

I mixed the left guitar to sound fuller and more apparent/"alive" like Dante (more mids and subtle on the reverb/room bus) and the right guitar - because D is being lead or shown the "right" way through his quest - to sound distant and cold/"dead" like Virgil (massive scoop, different pre-amp for less punchy but "flabby" low-end and drenched in 'verbs).
I have also tried, as keeping-it-musical-y possible, to show when either poet - or any significant character - does/says something individual. My success in this is yet to be seen lol.

Sorry for the essay, I hope my tunes melt your fkn face :)
